Choice of Genre

I have chosen to work with the horror genre as I feel this will be easiest to recreate with the resources and software I have. I feel the horror genre might give me a slight challenge with my work which I am willing to try, but I also feel that the horror genre will give me the most freedom and it will be easy to re-create.

The most stereotypical elements consist of;

  • Death
  • Graveyards
  • Deserted/Isolated Areas
  • Haunted Houses
  • Children to promote loss of innocence
  • Dark mise-en-scene
  • Vulnerable characters
  • Breakdown of technology

I think I could achieve this well as I have all the correct types of software to create the right kind of effects on any shots I might take. Also from research I noticed alot of horror trailers don't actually show any weapons or sometimes even the antagonist's face. This makes it alot easier for me as I won't be faced with any issues when I come to make my trailer. I am planning to use children in my trailer as I feel this will help me gain the correct type of reaction from the audience. I could set my film trailer in a place such as a house and farm which I can gain easy access to. I would also film in the dark to live up to the horror stereotype.

Films which fit within these elements are;

  • The Hauntings in Connecticut
  • Texas Killing Fields
  • The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
  • Orphan
  • Mama
  • The Uninvited
  • The Conjuring
  • The Woman In Black
